At Tiny Sparks Lab, we believe children don’t have to wait until they’re “older” to start thinking like engineers. This week’s Discovery Sparks activity invites your Tiny Scientist to explore the world of software engineering and digital coding—through imagination, observation, and creativity.

Software engineers use computers to build, design, test, and improve the digital tools we use every day. From apps and games to websites and online stores, engineers are problem-solvers who figure out how things work—and how to make them work better.
And here’s the best part:✨ Children already think like engineers.
🎨 Meet a Tiny Engineer!
In today’s Discovery Sparks coloring page, your Tiny Scientist steps into the role of a digital engineer. As they color, they’ll notice laptops, coding symbols, gears, lightbulbs, and other tools that engineers use to bring ideas to life.
This activity isn’t about getting the “right” answer—it’s about:
noticing details
asking questions
imagining possibilities
and understanding that trying again is part of the process
🧠 Try This Together: Discovery Sparks Mini-Activity
As you color, invite your child to search and talk about what they see:
Can you find and color:
💻 One computer
⚙️ Two gears
💡 One lightbulb
🔧 One place where the engineer is fixing or improving something
Then ask:
“What do you think the engineer is building?”
“What might happen if something doesn’t work the first time?”
“What would you like to create with technology?”
✨ Why This Matters
Software engineering helps children build problem-solving skills, confidence, and persistence. When kids see themselves as builders and creators—not just users of technology—they begin to understand that they have the power to shape the digital world around them.
Representation matters. When children see engineers who look like them—and imagine themselves in those roles—it opens doors to new possibilities and futures.
🌟 Keep the Sparks Going
This Discovery Sparks activity connects directly to our Tiny Sparks Tuesday feature highlighting a real-world software engineer. Together, these experiences help children see that STEM careers aren’t far away or unreachable—they start with curiosity, creativity, and asking great questions.
Print the coloring page, grab some crayons or markers, and enjoy discovering how engineering and technology are already part of your child’s world.

🖤 Big futures start with Tiny Sparks.
