Hi, I’m Nurse Janelle—and this is my STEM story!

Hi Tiny Scientists! My name is Janelle, and I’m a Registered Nurse who works in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
That means I take care of very sick babies—some who are born early and some who need extra help right after they are born. I help make sure they are safe, growing, and getting stronger every day!
When I was younger, I always knew I wanted to help people. But what makes my story extra special is that I was once a premature baby in the NICU too! I heard stories about how my nurses took such great care of me—and that’s a big reason why I’m here today.
That inspired me to become a nurse so I could do the same for other tiny babies.
One of my favorite things about my job is that I am always learning. I use science every day to understand how the body works, how illnesses affect babies, and how medicines can help them heal.
Because the babies I care for are so small, I have to carefully measure and calculate the exact amount of medicine they need. It’s a big responsibility, but it helps save lives!
The most rewarding part of my job is watching babies grow stronger. Some of them have a very tough start, but over time, they improve and get to go home with their families.
These tiny babies are incredibly strong and resilient—and it’s amazing to be part of their journey.
Because of science, I get to help the smallest and most vulnerable patients overcome big challenges. And I hope my story shows others that they can make a difference too!
💡 My message to Tiny Scientists: You can use your love of STEM to help care for others and make a real difference in the world.
✨ My STEM story shows that you can thrive and overcome life’s obstacles—even when others say you can’t.
💛 —Janelle, NICU Nurse
