Body Detectives: How Does Your Body Move and Feel Better?

This week’s Tiny Sparks activity helps kids explore the human body and anatomy, with a special focus on the spine—the part of your body that helps you stand tall, move, and stay balanced!
Your body is always working, even when you don’t notice it. From running and jumping to sitting and resting, your body depends on different systems working together—especially your bones, muscles, and spine.
That’s exactly what doctors like Dr. LaTanya Bowman, a Chiropractic Physician, help with every day! She helps people move better and feel better by taking care of their spine.
Tonight, your family will become Body Detectives to explore how your body works!
🔍 Family Activity: Build-a-Body (Spine Edition!)
What you need:
Paper
Crayons or markers
String, blocks, or small stacked objects (optional)
Step 1: Draw Your Body
Have your child draw a simple picture of a person (stick figure or detailed—whatever works!).
Now add a line down the middle of the back—this is the spine.
Explain: “The spine helps your body stay upright and lets you bend, twist, and move!”
Step 2: Test Your Movement
Ask your child to:
Touch their toes
Twist side to side
Reach up high
Then ask: “What part of your body is helping you move?”
Explain that the spine and muscles work together to make all of that happen!
Step 3: Build a Spine Model (Optional Fun!)
Use blocks, coins, or small objects to stack a “spine.”
Then gently bend it.
Ask: “What happens if it’s too stiff or wobbly?”
Explain: “A healthy spine helps your body move smoothly and feel good!”
🧠 Tiny Learning Moment
Explain to kids:
Your body is made up of systems that work together
Your spine is part of your skeletal system
It helps protect your spinal cord (which sends messages from your brain!)
When your body moves well, you can play, learn, and feel your best
Doctors like chiropractors help keep your body moving the right way
💬 Family Conversation Starters
Ask your Tiny Scientist:
What is your favorite way to move your body?
Why do you think your spine is important?
How do you feel when your body feels good vs. when it feels tired or sore?
What would happen if your body couldn’t move easily?
⭐ Tiny Sparks Challenge
Be a Body Detective all day!
Pay attention to how your body moves:
When you sit
When you walk
When you play
Draw or act out your favorite movement!
