Tech Detectives: How Do Computers Make Decisions?

This week’s Tiny Sparks activity helps kids explore how computers and AI make choices by looking for patterns—just like real data scientists and AI engineers!
Technology may seem complicated, but at its heart it’s really about finding patterns and solving problems. When companies want to understand what people like—whether it's favorite snacks, songs, or games—they look at data to help them decide what to do next.
That’s exactly what engineers like Robby, an AI & Analytics Engineer, do every day!
Tonight, your family will become Tech Detectives to see how computers learn from information.
🔍 Family Activity: The Pattern Game
What you need
Paper
Pencil or crayons
Small objects (cereal pieces, toys, blocks, coins, or snacks)
Step 1: Make a Pattern
A parent or older sibling creates a pattern using objects.
Example patterns:
cracker, cracker, grape, cracker, cracker, grape
red block, blue block, red block, blue block
toy car, toy car, stuffed animal, toy car, toy car, stuffed animal
Ask your child:
“What comes next?”
Step 2: Think Like a Computer
Explain that computers learn by looking at lots of examples and noticing patterns.
Say something like:
"Computers can’t think like people, but they are really good at spotting patterns in information."
Step 3: Let Your Child Be the Engineer
Let your child create a pattern for the rest of the family to solve.
They just became the AI engineer!
🧠 Tiny Learning Moment
Explain to kids:
Computers look at lots of information (data).
They find patterns.
Then they use those patterns to make predictions.
Examples kids understand:
What videos to recommend
What music you might like
What ads you see online
What shows appear on Netflix
💬 Family Conversation Starters
Ask your Tiny Scientist:
What patterns do you notice in your daily life?
What would you teach a computer to recognize?
Do you think computers can make mistakes? Why?
⭐ Tiny Sparks Challenge
Look around your home and find three examples of patterns.
They might be:
floor tiles
clothing designs
music beats
repeating shapes
Take a picture or draw your favorite pattern!
