Hi, I’m Tonya—and this is my STEM story!

Hello Tiny Scientists! My name is Tonya Freeze, and I’m an Athletic Trainer. That means I am part of a healthcare team that helps athletes stay safe, strong, and healthy. I work to prevent injuries before they even happen, and if someone does get hurt, I help them heal so they can get back to doing what they love—whether that’s playing soccer, dancing, or running down the field.
I’ve always been curious about how our bodies work. I first learned about this career from my high school athletic trainer, Ms. Jessica. She showed me how science can help fix injuries. Now, I use math to measure heartbeats and science to understand how bones and muscles move together.
The best part of my job is being a “body detective.” When an athlete gets injured, I use science to figure out what happened inside their body. I love that “Aha!” moment when I discover the answer and create a plan to help them heal and grow stronger.
Through healthcare and science, I help people keep doing what they love. There is nothing better than seeing someone I’ve helped run back onto the field with confidence and a huge smile on their face.
💬 My message for Tiny Scientists: It’s okay to make mistakes. Every time something doesn’t work the first time, your brain is growing and learning a new way to solve the puzzle. Don’t be afraid to try again. That just means you’re one step closer to your own “Aha!” moment.
✨ My STEM story shows that if you keep asking, “How does it work?” and keep trying, you too can help people stay strong, healthy, and happy.
💛 — Tonya Freeze, Athletic Trainer
